Fine Art Painter & Illustrator

Andre Gide

“Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better.”

Creating things of beauty is not an escape. It is where I find my greatest purpose; to worship.

As Michelangelo so wisely asserted, “The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.” It is here, where my inspiration is found, in painting little shadows of divine perfection, to capture things of beauty created by wiser hands.

I hope you enjoy these things of beauty as much as I enjoyed creating them. Feel free to take a peak below.

My Creative Process.

My art is born from moments of profound connection with the natural world. Whether it's the fleeting beauty glimpsed on a countryside drive or the immersive experience of a woodland walk with my husband, nature's tapestry ignites my creative spirit. I work primarily with watercolour and mixed media, often layering watercolour with the vibrant fluidity of acrylic ink or traditional ink. This interplay of liquids on the canvas fascinates me, as they merge and settle in unpredictable ways, creating unique and captivating patterns that contribute to the depth and texture of each piece.

The essence of a scene – the season, the time of day, and the inherent mood – dictates my palette. I strive to translate the feeling of a particular moment into a symphony of colours, using their subtle nuances to build perspective and draw the viewer into the heart of the impression. My process often begins with a swift pen or pencil sketch, a rapid capture of the initial feeling and composition. From there, I allow the watercolours and inks to mingle and dry, embracing the organic and often surprising results of their interaction.

Perspective plays a crucial role in my work, mirroring my own belief in the power of shifting viewpoints to gain deeper understanding. Just as changing my physical position can offer new insights, I sometimes depict familiar subjects like trees or flowers from unconventional angles – below, looking up, or from an elevated vantage point. Landscapes, for me, are about immersion, and I aim to convey a sense of the vastness and wonder that captivated me, inviting the audience to experience a semblance of that awe.

The unique character of different animals and species also holds a particular fascination. Their inherent natures often resonate with my own emotions, and studying their forms becomes a way to explore my inner landscape. Ultimately, my hope is that these painted impressions of nature serve as a mirror for the viewer, sparking their own memories, emotions, and insights. May the colours inspire, and the perspectives offer a fresh lens through which to see the world and perhaps, themselves.
